April 25, 2018 – Halfway through another week and that means the weekend is just around the corner. After looking ahead at next weeks forecast, it looks like the warm weather that is coming this weekend is here to stay and I couldn’t be more excited. In the meantime, we need to find a way to cope with the inconsistency that is this Spring’s weather. And, today’s blog post is all about spring layering (a foreign concept to many – including myself until recently).
By now, you probably are familiar with the constant ups and downs this spring has shown us (weather wise). It’s been normal to wear your winter coat to work to stay warm during your morning commute because we are greeted with near freezing temperatures in APRIL. But when you leave, it’s in the 60s making your winter coat unnecessary. This creates a problem. Most people don’t want to bring two separate jackets to work for going and leaving but you also don’t want to freeze on your way to work or overheat on your way out. My solution to this problem has been springtime layers. More often than not, people associate layers with fall and winter for those changing temperatures. But, you can also use layers for the transition from winter to spring.
Today was a prime example of these wonderfully inconsistent spring temperatures. This morning it was rainy and near freezing and this afternoon it was cloudy and, you guessed it, in the 60s (but the sun did decide to show it’s face for these pictures). To prepare for the chilly weather this morning, layers became my best friend. I define layers as the base layer, middle layer, and outer layer. For the cold spring weather, I wear lots of lighter layers to avoid having to lug around a large winter coat. And a t-shirt, a chambray shirt, and a rain jacket (not pictured) is the perfect example of one way to stay warm, comfortable, and hip.

Today, my base layer was my FAVORITE white t-shirt. This is the J. Crew Mercantile Featherweight Slub Cotton T-shirt in the color white. For these t-shirts, I like to go up one or two sizes to get an oversized look. I am wearing a small here. This shirt is exactly what it’s called, featherweight (aka, it’s so light and perfect for the summer). I love the how this t-shirt is semi fitted but because I decided to size up two sizes it is slightly oversized for me, letting me style it in multiple ways.

Next, my favorite chambray shirt acted as my middle (and outer) layer. Because it was raining when I went to work I wore my favorite raincoat (not pictured because it didn’t match but it kept me dry) that I purchased almost five years ago from a TX Maxx (yes, I know it’s TJ Maxx but in England, it’s called TX Maxx). The particular chambray shirt that I’m wearing from J. Crew Factory is no longer sold as it is last years shirt. This year the shirt is a tad different but can still be styled the same. The Pocket Chambray Shirt is absolutely perfect as a layering piece. The shirt is a little bit of a heavier weight so it provides a perfect barrier to the wind/breeze. But if you wear the shirt open (like I did), the shirt acts almost like a jacket or a sweater to keep you warm while also letting some air in. I love chambray because it goes with just about anything. I have worn it with black denim (i.e. here), white denim, leggings, shorts, skirts, etc. If you don’t have a chambray shirt, you need one and lucky for you I linked my favorites at the top of this section.

Even though I said chambray goes with just about everything, regular denim is not something I would ever pair it with. Some people like the denim on denim look, but I am not one of them. To avoid that issue, I love pairing chambray with colored denim. Today’s colored denim was my J. Crew Toothpick High Rise Jeans. Y’all know how much I love J. Crew and J. Crew Factory jeans and this pair is no exception. You can never go wrong with high-rise jeans. They hit all the right places. For girls like me who have very little curves, high-rise jeans give you the illusion of curves for me. They hide anything that needs to be hidden (like maybe you haven’t fully perfected your summer body, high-rise jeans hide the little pouch you’re still trying to get rid of). High-rise jeans are so forgiving and they make you feel like a million bucks. After wearing high-rise jeans the past few months, it’s hard for me to wear my regular rise jeans. So get yourself a pair and experience the magic that is high-rise jeans.

SURPRISE SURPRISE! I’m wearing my favorite blush pair of Baublebar Earrings again. Have y’all realized how much I adore blush yet? It truly has become my spring color. And I’m also wearing my white converse again. If y’all haven’t figured out how versatile these earrings and shoes are just check out my last few blogs and you’ll understand how great these items are. I’ll save you from reading yet another blog about these items and me raving about how great they are. I bet my next blog post will probably talk about one of these two items because they are just that wonderful.

Hopefully the next time y’all hear from me, we won’t have to worry about the inconsistent spring weather and we’ll actually be enjoying what’s considered normal mild spring temperatures.
Until Next Time,
Emily Jane
