April 20, 2018 – Happy FriYAY Y’all! We have made it through another week and that means a weekend full of relaxation. Weekends in Emily Jane’s book, call for fun outfits and in this case, fun prints.

In the spring (and year round if you love J. Crew), you see lots of Gingham. Gingham is typically navy and white. However, gingham is actually any plain-woven cotton cloth. It is usually white and a bold color (most commonly navy). I am just like most people and love any and all things gingham. I stumbled across this top while scrolling through Madewell’s clearance section (yes, you read that right this top is on clearance). And immediately when I saw this top, I fell in love with its unique take on gingham. I love that instead of the typical navy and white gingham, Madewell chose to have black and white gingham. Madewell’s Gingham-Plau Button-Down Shirt was immediately added to my shopping bag and subsequently added to my closet.
Besides immediately falling in love with this gingham shirt, I fell in love with the details in this shirt. This top has varying gingham patterns. The overall gingham is the typical larger check gingham. And the pocket, button line, and sleeves have smaller gingham checks. Some people will say that this top is too busy and should just stick with one gingham style, however, I kindly disagree. I think that Madewell did an excellent job mixing the gingham patterns.
This Madewell top falls in the Courier shirt collection. Courier shirts are a more oversized fit shirt that is longer in the back than in the front. For you skinny girls like me, I would only recommend buying courier shirts when they are on clearance because they are a little boxy for us. For you curvy girls out there, this top is absolutely PERFECT for you and I wish I had curves so that this shirt gave me more of a shape. If you are a skinny girl like me, the Madewell Central Shirt in Gabriel Stripe is a more fitted option for us and I have linked it here and in the widget at the top of the page.

Because this top is so long, it works perfectly to wear over high-rise jeans. Or, it even looks so cute tucked into high-rise jeans. The high-rise jeans I’m wearing here are my favorite pair of jeans. These jeans are the Classic Blue Wash High-Rise Skinny Jean with 29″ Inseam from J. Crew Factory. These are my favorite pair of jeans and this picture was taken on wear #4 of these jeans (and those previous three times, I wore them to work so I was moving and bending in them). So when I say that they do not stretch out after multiple wears, I mean it. Wear #4 and these jeans still fit me like a glove. Like I mentioned in a previous blog post, these jeans are backordered in most sizes but it is so worth it to order them. They are only backordered until May 7 so it’s not too bad of a backup. Again, I swear by these jeans and I wear them constantly.
BaubleBar Blush/Light Pink Earring Widget
Once again, I paired this black and white outfit with my blush pinata tassel drop BaubleBar earrings, like I mentioned in Wednesday’s post, these earrings are sadly sold out. Because of that, I attacked my blush/light pink BaubleBar earring widget at the top of this section (i.e. under the two pictures above). The blush color of these earrings added a fun (and springy) pop of color to an otherwise monochromatic outfit. Y’all have probably realized that I am currently very obsessed with the color blush and it has become my spring color. I love how such a subtle color can add such a large impact to an outfit.
To maintain the simplicity of this outfit, I paired it with my favorite pair of shoes. My favorite shoes are my white low top converse. These shoes go with just about everything. If y’all recall, I wore these shoes for Wednesday’s blog post with a t-shirt dress. And then two days later, I’m sharing a different way to style these shoes. Converse go perfectly with jeans and since these shoes are white, they go perfectly with this black and white gingham shirt. One of the reasons that I love these shoes so much is they are so easy to keep clean. People see or hear about white shoes and their first reaction is to worry because white shoes, they have to get dirty easily. But since converse are made of fabric, there are multiple ways to clean them. There is a baking soda and white vinegar paste you can make to clean them or if you want to be lazy, you can literally throw them into the washing machine. This is my second pair of white converse. My first pair lasted me two years before it was time to part ways with them. My first pair trekked around Europe, withstood college (and all things associated with college), two summers, etc. I love white converse and their versatility.
This outfit featured lots of colors that go with just about anything. Black, white, and blush are going to be some of my staple colors for spring. So get ready to continue seeing these earrings and shoes.
Until Next Time,
Emily Jane
Can you tell me what size you ended up getting in this shirt? The item is final sale so it is so hard to tell what size is a good fit for me would be. Thanks!
